You’re in Korea. Now What? (5/10)

How Late Does the Seoul Subway Actually Run?
The subway may still be running. Your subway may not be.
Time moves fast at night in Seoul.
A drink in Hongdae.
A late dinner in Gangnam.
A little more time in Seongsu or by the Han River.
Before you know it, it’s almost midnight.
But you’re not too worried.
You’ve heard people say:
“The Seoul subway runs late.”
So you head down to the station after midnight.
There are still people on the platform.
Trains are still arriving.
Everything looks fine.
Then you check your route.
And suddenly—
your last train may already be gone.
Or the line you need to transfer to has already stopped running.
Or the final train does not go all the way to your hotel.
That’s when the question hits:
“Wait… the subway is still running. So why can’t I get back to my hotel?”
There Is No Single “Last Subway Time”
There is no single closing time that applies to every subway line in Seoul.
General operating hours are only a rough guide.
The actual last train depends on:
the line
the station
the direction
the day of the week
the destination
and whether you need to transfer
So the useful question is not:
“What time does the Seoul subway close?”
It is:
“What is the last train for my exact route tonight?”
The Last Train May Not Go Where You Think
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make.
Late at night, trains on the same line may not all travel to the same final destination.
During the day, you may get used to trains continuing all the way to the end of the line.
At night, some trains may stop earlier.
So even if a train is still arriving at your platform, that does not mean it will take you all the way home.
Check the destination shown on the platform display.
Otherwise, you may successfully catch the subway—
and still end up several stations away from your hotel.
That is when the real adventure begins. 😂
Transfers Are the Real Trap
The bigger problem is often not your first train.
It is the transfer.
Imagine your hotel requires two subway lines.
Your first train is still running at 12:30 a.m.
So you get on.
No problem.
Then you arrive at the transfer station.
And the last train on the second line has already left.
Catching the first train did not help very much.
That is why you should always check the entire route, not just the departure time from your first station.
Especially if you need one or more transfers.
In other words:
The subway may still be running.
Your route may already be dead.
Not Every Line Runs on the Same Schedule
To a visitor, everything may look like one giant “Seoul Subway” system.
But the Seoul metropolitan rail network includes different operators.
There are Seoul Metro lines, KORAIL services, AREX, the Shinbundang Line, and other connected rail systems.
They do not always follow the exact same operating schedule.
That matters most late at night.
Airport routes are especially worth checking separately.
So do not assume every line runs until the same time just because they all appear on the same map.
Weekends Can Be Different Too
Another easy mistake:
assuming yesterday’s last train time will be the same today.
Weekdays, weekends, and public holidays can have different schedules.
Special events or major holidays can also bring extended service on certain lines.
So if you caught a late train on Friday night, do not assume Saturday will work exactly the same way.
Late-night subway schedules are less predictable than they look.
So How Should Travelers Check?
If you plan to stay out late, check your full route before you leave.
NAVER Map and Kakao Map are useful for public transportation in Korea.
Near midnight, check three things:
1. When the last train leaves your station
2. Where that train actually terminates
3. Whether your transfer train is still running
The important question is not:
“Is there still a train?”
It is:
“Can this route still get me all the way back to my hotel?”
What If You Miss the Last Train?
If you miss everything completely, the most practical option is usually simple:
take a taxi.
And in Seoul, that is not as dramatic as it may sound.
The city does not suddenly go to sleep when the subway stops.
In busy nightlife areas such as Hongdae, Gangnam, and Itaewon, there are often still plenty of people outside late at night.
And you will usually still see taxis on the road.
You can hail one on the street, use a taxi stand, or call one through a ride-hailing app.
For international travelers, it is a good idea to save your hotel name and address on your phone—
preferably in Korean.
That makes things much easier when you are tired at 1 a.m.
Taxis Are Available — But Late Night Costs More
There is one catch.
Late-night taxi rides can cost more because of nighttime surcharges.
And on busy Friday or Saturday nights, especially in popular nightlife districts, demand can be high.
So even if you see lots of taxis, that does not always mean one will stop for you immediately.
Seoul also has late-night N buses.
They can be useful if one happens to match your route.
But if you are exhausted, unfamiliar with the city, and simply want to get back to your hotel—
a taxi is usually the easiest Plan B.
One Small Preparation Helps a Lot
When you check into your hotel, save this somewhere on your phone:
hotel name + Korean address
If you take a taxi late at night, you can simply show it to the driver.
Sometimes the English hotel name may not be immediately recognizable.
A Korean address or map screen makes things much easier.
It is a tiny bit of preparation.
But at 1 a.m., after missing the last train—
it can suddenly feel very important.
The Easiest Rule for Travelers
If you plan to stay out late in Seoul, remember this:
Don’t ask:
“What time does the Seoul subway close?”
Ask:
“What is the last train for my exact route tonight?”
And if it is getting close to midnight—
check before you head to the station.
Missing the last train does not mean you are stranded.
Taxis are still available.
The city is still awake.
But there is one difference:
a trip that would have cost a few thousand won on the subway may now become a late-night taxi ride across Seoul. 😂
Seoul Doesn’t Go to Sleep When the Subway Does
That is one of the funny things about Seoul at night.
The subway stops.
But when you walk back outside—
restaurants are still open.
Bars are still full.
People are still on the streets.
Taxis are still moving.
So it can feel strange.
“The city is still completely alive. Why is my subway gone?”
Because Seoul nightlife and Seoul subway schedules do not run on the same clock.
Missing the train does not end your night.
But the next day—
you will probably check the last train a little earlier. 😂
